On Monday you could be shooting a television pilot while on Thursday you’re hosting a radio show on the coolest station in town. It’s all in a day’s work with a degree in Radio and Television. PPCC offers some of the best training opportunities in the state through our fully-equipped radio and television studios. Before long, Hollywood could be knocking on your door.

If you’ve always dreamed of working in the news and entertainment industry, you could combine your creativity and initiative with your technical and communication skills to produce a challenging career in radio and television broadcasting. You will write, produce, edit and package programs for the broadcast and video production community, using a wide variety of specialized equipment and computer technology. This field is fast paced and exciting, and you’ll have many different areas in which you can specialize. Depending on the size of the station or company, you may handle many functions, or focus on a particular area.

Program Description

The Radio & Television program offers training in digital audio/video equipment, practical experience in the writing and production of commercials and promotional announcements, the development of audition tapes, the experience of working in a TV production setting, and other important skills such as lighting, single and multi-camera techniques, effects, editing, directing, producing, and much more.

You will utilize the skills you learn in the classroom with hands-on projects in the Pikes Peak Community College radio station and TV studio. On the PPCC radio station, KEPC 89.7 FM, students operate professional radio equipment, perform announcing and production duties, and utilize professional software with an on-screen computer log.

Students who elect to complete a certificate program learn specialized broadcast skills in a shorter period of time. Course work completed in the certificate program may be applied to one of the options in the Associate of Applied Science degree program.

Career Path Notes

You can get real-world experience by participating in internships at local television and radio broadcasting or video production facilities, and earn college credit for it, too.

Employment Opportunities

The Associate of Applied Science degree and certificates provide training for entry-level positions such as Broadcast Technician, Radio & TV Announcer, Commercial Copy Writer, Radio Station Board Operator, Sound Technician, TV studio operator, and Video Operator, along with non-broadcast occupations in audio and video production. With more education and experience, you could go on to become a Radio & TV Producer, TV Director, Newscaster, or Radio & TV Commercial Producer.

Earnings Outlook

In Colorado, the median hourly salary in 2005 for Broadcast Technicians was $15.96, with a salary range of $7.92 – $29.05. From 2004 to 2014, there are expected to be an average of 30 job openings per year. The median hourly salary in 2005 for Radio and Television Announcers was $13.10, with a salary range of $7.55 – $33.30 and an average of 30 anticipated job openings per year.
