Lt. Gov. Garcia Provides Keynote at PPCC Graduation

Colorado Springs, Colo. – May 6, 2013 – Colorado Lt. Gov. Joseph Garcia will provide the keynote address at the Pikes Peak Community College (PPCC) Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 11, 2-5 p.m., New Life Church Auditorium, 1025 Voyager Parkway. This spring nearly 950 students will graduate and more than 300 students will participate in the graduation ceremony. The event is free and open to the public.

In his role as lieutenant governor, Garcia serves as the executive director of the Department of Higher Education, a position in which he provides expert leadership to the governor regarding education initiatives. A former college president of both PPCC and Colorado State University-Pueblo, he has been instrumental in improving remedial education and providing a smooth reverse transfer process between two- and four-year colleges.

Ever committed to education in the state of Colorado, the lieutenant governor will deliver a speech entitled, “Gaining Ground, Growing Up.”

Outgoing Student Government President Troy Smith will also take the stage to present an address entitled, “We did it! Now what?,” that speaks to PPCC’s vision statement: “Students succeed at PPCC.”

Additionally, three PPCC graduates will be recognized for their contributions and achievements with awards for Outstanding Leadership, Inspirational Achievement and Outstanding Service to the College. Similarly, graduating vets and active military will be recognized and presented with a coin during the ceremony to honor them for their service.

Pikes Peak Community College, in its 45th year of operation, is a two-year college offering associate’s degrees and various certifications in career and technical fields. With four campuses, three military education centers in El Paso county and nearly 200 programs of study, PPCC serves approximately 22,000 students annually.
