Colorado Springs, Colo. – May 21, 2013 – During the 2013 tax season, Pikes Peak Community College (PPCC) partnered with Denver-based Piton Foundation providing free tax preparation for low- to moderate-income families through Tax Help Colorado. PPCC’s IRS-trained students filed 512 returns, helping local tax payers claim $1,099,735 in refunds.

This year, 21 PPCC students spent 1,055 hours preparing and filing returns for individuals whose household income was less than $50,000, helping to alleviate the burden of commercial tax preparation costs.

Many of the taxpayers who visited PPCC were eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). One of the nation’s most successful anti-poverty programs, the EITC promotes employment while providing valuable refunds to low-wage earners. At PPCC these working families claimed $411,032.00 in EITC refunds this year.

In 2013, 16 colleges participating in Tax Help Colorado operated 26 free tax sites. Statewide more than 9,200 individuals received free tax preparation services and processed 236 prior-year returns. This is a 33 percent increase from the previous year. Tax Help Colorado helped families claim more than $18.5 million in tax refunds in 2013, including nearly $6.8 million from the EITC.
