Colorado Springs, Colo. – Feb. 21, 2013 – Pikes Peak Community College (PPCC) received a donation of a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) lathe from Bal Seal Engineering. This electronically programmable lathe will assist students in the growing Machining and Electronics programs by allowing them to train on a very precise lathe, which will in turn heighten the students’ academic experience and training levels.

“Nationwide, there is a critical shortage of CNC machinists,” said James Kynor, associate dean, Manufacturing, Workforce and Career and Technical Education. “Having this advanced tool greatly benefits our students as well as machining-related employers here in the Front Range who are in need of employees with this skill. “

As a follow-up to the donation, Bal Seal executives recently visited PPCC to tour the Electronics Technology Program area. Upon learning more about the curriculum and seeing the types of skills being taught, they were confident that the college’s Electronics Program is ideally suited to prepare students for career opportunities with Bal Seal.

Bal Seal executives commented that the rigor of the Electronics Technology Program, and the emphasis on soldering, assembly and testing of very small components, provides students with critical and transferable skills that the company highly values in its employees.

Pikes Peak Community College, in its 45th year of operation, is a two-year college offering associate’s degrees and various certifications in career and technical fields. With four campuses, three military education centers in El Paso county and more than 200 programs of study, PPCC serves approximately 22,000 students annually. PPCC’s career and technical programs teach the skills needed to successfully work in business, technical, industrial, service and health fields.
