Become a Farrier....
Be your own boss.
Set your own schedule.
Take charge of your life.
What is a Farrier?
A Farrier is trained in the current methods of trimming and shoeing horses. As a certified Farrier you will review the anatomy of the equine leg and foot, and how function of the limbs impacts the shoeing process. You will learn how to remove the old shoe, clean out the sole of the foot, use nippers to remove excess hoof wall growth, and how to fit and nail on a new shoe.
What benefits are there to becoming a Farrier?
The Equine industry provides you with the opportunity to be your own boss and set your own schedule, while earning competitive wages. Farriers in our area make anywhere from $40 for a basic trim, to $150, or more, for full shoes on each horse they work with. Watch your business grow as you develop your skills and clientele. The trade of a Farrier is in demand locally, nationally, and internationally.
What makes this program different?
You will attend classes at the USAF Academy Equestrian Center. We believe that to become a good Farrier you must have “hands-on” experience. By attending classes at the equestrian center you have the advantage of a classroom, lab, and horses at one site. The need for field trips is eliminated, allowing for more “hands-on” time under the horse(s).
Your instructor is an experienced and successful Farrier that is active in the industry, has mentored Apprentices, and has taught Farrier Science courses for over 7 years and a Farrier for over 13 years. He is dedicated to making the experience positive and to providing you with the training you will need to begin your Farrier career.
What is included in the cost?
The tools you will need to work as a Farrier, a textbook, and a variety of horses to work with.
Upon completion of the coursework you will receive a certificate from Pikes Peak Community College, an accredited educational institution.
