The PPCC Alpha Gamma Alpha Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and the PPCC Black Student Union (BSU) teamed up to hold a Campus Cleanup Day at the Centennial Campus on October 21. The group concentrated on exterior common areas, entrances and smoking areas around all of the buildings on campus. Their goal was to pick up every single piece of trash, including an amazing number of cigarette butts, and they did an outstanding job. Their efforts made the entire Centennial Campus a more clean, pleasant and attractive place to study and work for everyone.
Student participants included Jeremy Mathis, Donna Ortega, Sabu Windsong, Adam Hooper, Josh Ginn, Suzanne Giles, and Drew Johnson from Phi Theta Kappa; and Kristina James, Celize Acosta, Jay Earl, Chantel Coney, and Ernest Garrison from the Black Student Union.
“There was great teamwork between Phi Theta Kappa and the Black Student Union,” says Mathis, “As well as great support from the faculty and staff of PPCC. We hope to be able to do this again in the future, with greater success and include the other campuses too.” The Facilities and Grounds Departments assisted with the cleanup by lending tools such as brooms, grabbers, dust pans, and trash bags.
The students would like to thank Nancy Martinez, Gary Vigil, and the rest of the Facilities Maintenance and Operations staff, and club advisors Carole Olds, James DeHerrera, and Eddie Hughes.
