In celebration of Black History Month, PPCC will host a presentation on 'Lessons from Brown vs Board of Education' on Wednesday, February 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. in room C-102 on Centennial Campus.
Joe Garcia, president of CSU-Pueblo, will provide an insightful overview of the case. The presentation will highlight the life and background of Lucinda Todd, the first plaintiff in the case, and provide a rare glimpse of her activities as secretary of the Topeka Chapter of the NAACP and its role in the events that eventually led to the historic court case of Oliver Brown et. al. V The Board of Education.
Additionally, it will focus on the many unreported and under-reported facts about these events related to the development of the case. Photographs will be shown of rare documents highlighting the most important communications between the national office and the Topeka Branch of the NAACP.
The event will include a question and answer period with Nancy Todd-Noches, daughter of Lucinda Todd, who witnessed many of the meetings and met many of the national representatives of the NAACP during these pivotal events in American history.
The event is presented by the PPCC Women's Re-Entry Program, and sponsored by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) and the UCCS College of Education, Quality and Excellence Community Learning Series.
