As you know, we've recently had our first real taste of winter from Jack Frost. While Facilities work crews will be out early on inclement weather days to clear snow and mitigate icy conditions, there are also some things you can do to keep yourself safe while negotiating terrain in wintery conditions. Below are suggestions for keeping yourself safe, compliments of the PPCC Grounds department. Be safe, enjoy winter to its fullest!
While walking:
• Walk like a penguin: arms apart, feet spread slightly, short steps
• Maintain 2 or 3 point contact with vehicle until steady
• Leave hand-carry items in vehicle until ready to shut door
• Avoid using an elbow to shut door
• Set hand-carried items down, get steady then shut car door
• Most slip/fall injuries occur with heel or toe “strikes”
• Avoid carrying a heavy or awkward item over ice/snow
• Carry purses and briefcases low and by the side
• Keep hands out of pockets for better balance
• DO NOT use a cell phone while walking on icy surfaces
• Wear shoes suitable for slick conditions
• Wipe shoes thoroughly when entering bldgs with tile floors
• Watch for slopes or elevation changes, however slight
While driving:
• Allow extra driving time to get to where you’re going
• Slow down
• Leave extra space between you and other drivers
• Don’t follow snow removal equipment too closely
• Drive defensively
• Use snow rated tires
• Carry an emergency safety kit
