How online classes work

PPCC’s online sections meet all the same objectives as their traditional counterparts, and you will earn the same credits. In most cases, textbooks are the same, too. Here is how they’re different:

For each class you take, you will log into a course shell that includes your syllabus, lists of readings and assignments, instructor’s lecture notes, discussion topics, web links, publisher materials, and whatever else your instructor has included to make an interesting and effective class. In most cases, you will take tests and quizzes online as well.

You will have due dates for assignments and tests, but within those timeframes you will work at your own pace. You won’t have to be online at specific times, so you can work the course activities around your busy schedule.

You should plan to log in at least three times a week. Online discussions and blogs are an important part of your courses, and you will want to participate often. Generally, discussion participation will be part of your grade. You will be able to contact your instructors through email in the course shell, but most instructors are local, so you can make appointments to see them on campus as well.

Most courses are on the same fifteen-week schedule as traditional classes, but we are offering more and more ten-week sessions that begin the sixth week of the semester. Those sections are identified by a note in the list of courses.

If you are a new PPCC student…

Most new, degree-seeking students must take placement tests before they can register for classes. Click here for more information. New students who live far from PPCC may have to take placement tests at a different location before enrolling in classes. Testing can be completed at community colleges and other educational institutions around the country. Go to the National College Testing Association’s web site http://www.ncta-testing.org/ or check the Testing Center page for more information.

If you are seeking a degree, go to the Career Planning and Advising Center at any of our four campuses to set up your first semester classes and find out who your academic advisor will be.  New students who live far from PPCC should email advising@ppcc.edu for assistance.
