With your AAS in Computer Information Systems, you can have a career programming and troubleshooting computers and software, analyzing and managing computer systems.

Computer Information Systems is a high-growth field with outstanding opportunities for employment. You may use your broad knowledge of computer software applications, computer programming, database management, web design, and system design to provide technical support in almost every industry world-wide. CIS professionals are needed in areas such as technical support, help-desk, customer service, computer programming, applications development, systems analysis, database management and web design. The need for highly trained workers to design, develop and manage new computer hardware and software systems is increasing. This includes workers in a number of specific areas such as management of information systems, programming, database management, and web development. Management of information systems requires knowledge of computer hardware and software. Information systems specialists often install and manage computer hardware and software programs within an organization. Computer programmers write, test and maintain the detailed instructions that computers follow to perform various functions. CIS professionals must have a broad knowledge of computer systems and technologies, as well as strong problem solving and analysis skills. They must be able to think logically and have strong verbal and written communication skills. These workers must often deal with a number of tasks simultaneously. Program Description

The Computer Information Systems program provides a solid foundation with a broad focus that will allow you the greatest freedom of movement within the computer industry. You will gain experience in software applications, computer programming, database management, web design, and system design as well as verbal and written business communication skills. The curriculum is continually updated to include the newest technologies.

You may earn a two-year AAS degree in Computer Information Systems, a one-year Computer Applications Specialist certificate, or a one-semester Programming certificate. You may choose to begin with a certificate, then continue on to complete the Associate of Applied Science degree. The Computer Applications Specialist certificate will provide you with a proficiency in using microcomputer software that is used in today's business environment, qualifying you for many entry-level positions. The Programming certificate concentrates on the Java environment, with components in SQL and Oracle.

Employment Opportunities

The certificates and Associate of Applied Science degree provide training for entry-level positions such as Computer Support Specialist, Computer Applications Specialist, Help-Desk Technician, and many other occupations that require broad computer knowledge and experience.

More advanced information technology careers such as Computer Programmer, Systems Analyst, Database Programmer, and Systems Manager generally require at least a Bachelor’s degree. Students interested in pursuing these careers directly should enroll in the Associate of Science degree in Computer Science, then continue on for a Bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university.

Earnings Outlook

In Colorado, the median hourly salary in 2005 for Computer Support Specialists was $22.29, with a salary range of $13.09 – $35.69. From 2004 to 2014, there are expected to be an average of 700 job openings per year. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics.
