“Organic chemistry is the chemistry of carbon compounds. Biochemistry is the study of carbon compounds that crawl.”- Mike Adam

You can go an hour, several hours or even a day without reading, writing and arithmetic, but you can’t go one second without chemistry. Everything you hear, see, smell, taste, and touch involves chemistry and chemicals, and the life processes of all organisms involve chemical changes. The science of chemistry is the study of all the materials that make up our physical world, their composition and interactions. Our high standard of living depends heavily on the contributions of chemists to agriculture, manufacturing, new technologies, and the development of efficient means of transportation and communication. Chemists play a key role in the development of drugs, which are helping to cure and alleviate diseases and prolong life span. Chemists have developed substances such as Kevlar, Teflon, plastics, alloys, fuels, and thousands of other new and useful products. Chemists are also at the forefront of developing fields such as nanotechnology. They are actively involved in environmental issues and are helping to tap new sources of energy to replace the earth's finite reserves of petroleum. It is essential to have an understanding of chemistry to truly understand the world around us. Want to find out if this program is for you? AA/AS Degree

The Associate of Science degree is designed to give you a traditional liberal arts education with a math or science emphasis that will transfer to a four year college or university. The AS provides a solid foundation of study in the areas of natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, and allied health. Click here for track specific information.

Program Description

The Associate of Applied Science Degree with an emphasis in Chemistry stresses a broad understanding of the broad general principles in chemistry, along with a solid grounding in scientific method, reinforced with hands-on laboratory work. Students in the program will learn essential skills in mathematics and physics, complemented by the balanced liberal arts curriculum, designed for transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

"60+60" Transfer Guarantee

Spend two years at PPCC, earning your Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree, and we’ll send you off with half the credits you’ll need for a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. Guaranteed. If you sign up for the 60+60 Bachelor’s Degree Transfer Program, we guarantee that the credits you’ve earned at PPCC will automatically be accepted by any four-year, public institution of higher learning in the state – providing, of course, you follow a few simple rules. For instance, you have to maintain at least a “C” in each of your 60+60 courses. And only approved 60+60 courses apply. But other than that, there’s hardly anything difficult about it. If you think you might want to move on to a state college or university after completing your two years at PPCC, ask one of our advisors about the 60+60 program. Employment Opportunities

Chemistry is one of the most diverse sciences. A chemist can work in a wide range of areas, such as nuclear chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry of inorganic or organic compounds, the theory of chemical processes, and chemistry of the environment. Career opportunities relating to chemistry include teaching, industrial processes, medical science, criminology, metallurgy, food processing, pharmacology, geochemistry, environmental sciences, and many more.

Career Path Notes

This program of study provides a good background for entry into a career as a Chemist, Chemical Engineer, Crime Lab (forensic) Analyst, Food and Drug Inspector, and Food Technologist.
