The human being is a creative animal and has an innate need to create. The fountainhead of creativity lies in the imagination, which manifests itself in the projection of images. Art, then, is the language in images by which man communicates ideas and concepts of the self, others, and the universe. This program is designed to allow you to discover and develop yourself and your creativity in such media as drawing, design, painting, watercolor, photography and ceramics.
Personal expression in the visual arts takes as many forms as there are artists. As an art student, you will become aware of the variety of expressions, especially present in contemporary art, and be able to analyze them based on impact and in relationship to a solid foundation of ideas and concepts. You will also create a professional, comprehensive portfolio.

AA/AS Degree
The Associate of Arts degree is designed to give you a traditional liberal arts education that will transfer to a four year college or university. Program Description
An Associate of Arts degree with an emphasis in Art/Photography is designed to help you develop strong drawing skills and to internalize design principles and color theory. You will gain knowledge in Art History through exposure to the evolution of ideas, techniques and use of materials.
You will receive a traditional liberal arts education that will transfer to a four year college, university and private art school and fulfill the requirements of the first two years of a Bachelor’s Degree. At the Bachelor or Graduate level you may specialize in art education, art history, art therapy, studio art; painting, printmaking, ceramics, photography, or sculpture.

The study of Art has many varied career opportunities. Some careers include Education (K-12 art educator, college or university art instructor/professor in studio art and art history, art school director), art designer (advertising, graphic design, printmaking, photography, jewelry, fiber, theater set designer), business of art (framing/presentation, art materials/supplies, art agent), gallery management, museum studies, and professional artist.
Career Path Notes
We recommend that you consult regularly with your faculty advisor. If you plan to become a teacher, you must work closely with your faculty advisor to make sure you choose the right courses for a smooth transfer! Teacher preparation programs have specific course requirements which vary by four year colleges and universities. Pikes Peak Community College participates in a statewide articulation agreement for the guaranteed transfer of an Associate of Arts degree in K-12 Art Education. Pikes Peak Community College also has many articulation agreements with four year colleges, universities and private art schools for BA and BFA degrees.
