Explore the living world around you.
Biology is the study of life and the changes that take place with and around all living things. It is broadly divided into zoology, the study of animal life, and botany, the study of plant life.
Pursuing a career in biology can be immensely rewarding and exciting. Studying biology teaches us to ask questions, make observations, evaluate evidence, and solve problems. Biologists learn how living things work, how they interact with one another, and how they evolve. They may study cells under a microscope, insects in a rainforest, viruses that affect human beings, plants in a greenhouse, or lions in the African grasslands. Their work increases our understanding about the natural world in which we live and helps us address issues of personal well being and worldwide concern, such as environmental depletion, threats to human health, and maintaining viable and abundant food supplies.
Biological Sciences is a fast-growing, exciting field to begin your college career. Want to find out if this program is for you? Check out potential careers on the web at www.acinet.org or www.bls.gov/oco.

The AS provides a solid foundation of study in the areas of natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, and allied health. Click here for track specific information. |
Program Description
The study of biological sciences prepares you for a variety of fields including the traditional ones – biology teacher, doctor, nurse, or conservationist. New fields have developed in life science areas such as paramedicine, cellular biology, wildlife management, and forestry. Other fields, which may require a modified program, include agriculture, allied health, natural resources management, and food science. Please consult your advisor for the specific requirements in these fields. |
"60+60" Transfer Guarantee
Spend two years at PPCC, earning your Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree, and we’ll send you off with half the credits you’ll need for a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. Guaranteed.
If you sign up for the 60+60 Bachelor’s Degree Transfer Program, we guarantee that the credits you’ve earned at PPCC will automatically be accepted by any four-year, public institution of higher learning in the state – providing, of course, you follow a few simple rules. For instance, you have to maintain at least a “C” in each of your 60+60 courses. And only approved 60+60 courses apply. But other than that, there’s hardly anything difficult about it.
If you think you might want to move on to a state college or university after completing your two years at PPCC, ask one of our advisors about the 60+60 program. Find out more at www.ppcc.edu/60plus60. |

Minimum Recommended Basic Skills
College-level math, English and reading skills are crucial to your success in Biology courses. A minimum of MAT 099, ENG 090 and REA 090 are necessary for success in these courses. It does not matter what your initial placement test scores are, as long as you complete any necessary developmental math and reading courses to provide you with these skills before starting your program of science courses. ENG 090 is the minimum requirement for English, but we suggest you be at least enrolled in ENG 121 before starting any Science coursework. |
