According to a National Geographic Survey,
• Half of young Americans can't find New York on a map.
• 33% of respondents couldn’t pinpoint Louisiana on a map.
• Nearly 30% could not find the Pacific Ocean on a map.
• Only 37% of young Americans can find Iraq on a map—though U.S. troops have been there since 2003.
• Nearly three-quarters incorrectly named English as the most widely spoken native language.
• 20% of young Americans think Sudan is in Asia. (It's the largest country in Africa.)
• 48% of young Americans believe the majority population in India is Muslim. (It's Hindu—by a landslide.)

Geography is no longer just the study of the world’s topography. Today’s geographers get the big picture. They evaluate the cause of earth’s changes and create new ways to deal with our rapidly changing planet. Geographers make land use studies and track climatic changes that will influence our food supply. They study population growth, water and air pollution. They are in touch with our planet—a planet in crisis.
Be prepared for an increasingly global future. The study of Geography will give you the skills you need for navigating the international economy and understanding the relationships among people and places that provide critical context for world events. Geography teaches people how to become global citizens – that is, how to appreciate and value the earth and protect it for future generations. Geographers are skilled in the global implications of world economics, politics, societies, cultures, technology, and world environmentalism.
Studying geography is also fun. Students learn about people, places, cultures, patterns of development, environmental systems, climate distribution, and the interaction of the environment and living things. Geographers are often travelers who study and experience new places first-hand.

AA/AS Degree
The Associate of Arts degree is designed to give you a traditional liberal arts education that will transfer to a four year college or university. The AA provides a solid foundation of study in the areas of arts and humanities, communication, or social sciences. Click here for track specific information.
Program Description
Geography means, from its Greek origin, “to describe the earth.” It is the scientific description, analysis, and explanation of spatial variations of the earth, answering questions of location and place. Geography is divided into two major fields: physical and cultural. Physical geography describes all phenomena of land, sea, and air at the surface of the earth. It focuses on processes that influence surface events, involving energy systems and environmental subsystems and materials. Cultural geography is the scientific study of the human-land relationship. It explores how humans impact the land, sea, and air and how they are influenced by the same.
The two-year Associate of Arts (AA) degree with an emphasis in Geography is designed to transfer to a four-year college or university and fulfill the requirements of the first two years of a bachelor’s degree. At the bachelor and graduate levels you may specialize in specific aspects of the field of geography – regional geography, environmental studies, cartography and GIS, urban and regional planning, economic geography, physical geography, cultural and human geography, or geography education.
