“I am human; let nothing human be alien to me” – Terence (Roman playwright)
What defines a “human being?” What do we mean when we describe some behavior as “inhuman”? Have different cultures in different places and times defined human beings differently? How can we know what beliefs and values differ from ours? One of the best ways to answer these questions is to study other times and places through their arts: paintings, mosaics, stained glass, weaving, pottery, sculpture, architecture, music, literature, and philosophy. Through this study we can arrive at clearer ideas about our own humanity, our individual values and those of our society.
Humanities is the study of human beings through their creations. You will study the arts to discover the nature of humankind and the values held by those living during a particular historical period. You will learn to look at the ideals and concerns of other cultures and to reassess and refine your own values.

AA/AS Degree
The Associate of Arts degree is designed to give you a traditional liberal arts education that will transfer to a four year college or university. The AA provides a solid foundation of study in the areas of arts and humanities, communication, or social sciences. Click here for track specific information. |
Program Description
The two-year Associate of Arts (AA) degree with an emphasis in Humanities prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university and fulfill the requirements of the first two years of a bachelor’s degree in academic disciplines that will prepare them for careers as teachers, museum directors or curators, archivists, writers, librarians, and work that requires them to interact with other cultures. Humanities majors may later specialize in any of the fine arts, literature, and philosophy or in the history of the arts of a particular period or country. |
"60+60" Transfer Guarantee
Spend two years at PPCC, earning your Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree, and we’ll send you off with half the credits you’ll need for a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. Guaranteed.
If you sign up for the 60+60 Bachelor’s Degree Transfer Program, we guarantee that the credits you’ve earned at PPCC will automatically be accepted by any four-year, public institution of higher learning in the state – providing, of course, you follow a few simple rules. For instance, you have to maintain at least a “C” in each of your 60+60 courses. And only approved 60+60 courses apply. But other than that, there’s hardly anything difficult about it.
If you think you might want to move on to a state college or university after completing your two years at PPCC, ask one of our advisors about the 60+60 program. Find out more at www.ppcc.edu/60plus60. |
