Mathematics

Math is the basic language of the world – everyone uses math in almost everything they do, often without realizing it.
People who understand math are in great demand by employers all across the country. In fact, eight of today’s top 10 degrees are based in math – accounting, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, information sciences and systems, computer engineering, civil engineering, and economics/finance.
Many technical careers require significant application of mathematics, including analyzing, describing and interpreting data. Employees in business, industry, and government are expected to apply mathematics skills and concepts when making informed decisions, and then use the language of mathematics to communicate those decisions. Students with a solid foundation in mathematics will be in high demand in almost every field.

Students will be prepared to transfer as a junior to any four-year college of university, to major in mathematics, other sciences, education, or hi-tech programs. The program has built-in flexibility to allow students to tailor a course program that will best fit their overall career goals.
"60+60" Transfer Guarantee
Spend two years at PPCC, earning your Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree, and we’ll send you off with half the credits you’ll need for a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. Guaranteed.
If you sign up for the 60+60 Bachelor’s Degree Transfer Program, we guarantee that the credits you’ve earned at PPCC will automatically be accepted by any four-year, public institution of higher learning in the state – providing, of course, you follow a few simple rules. For instance, you have to maintain at least a “C” in each of your 60+60 courses. And only approved 60+60 courses apply. But other than that, there’s hardly anything difficult about it.
If you think you might want to move on to a state college or university after completing your two years at PPCC, ask one of our advisors about the 60+60 program. Find out more at www.ppcc.edu/60plus60
Employment Opportunities
According to the NACE Job Outlook 2007 survey, college students with a math- or science-related degree are likely to earn significantly higher starting pay than their peers.
A degree in mathematics opens the door to actuarial science, statistics, and economics as well as opportunities in education. An Actuary is a business professional who deals with the financial impact of risk and uncertainty. Statisticians work with theoretical and applied statistics in both the private and public sectors. The core of that work is to measure, interpret, and describe the world and human activity patterns within that world.
Mathematicians, particularly those with a background in economics, are frequently hired by businesses. For example, airlines employ mathematicians to determine the amount of fuel required to fly their routes and project passenger demand and maintenance costs to produce flight schedules.
Career Path Notes
PPCC has articulation agreements in place that will help students to transfer to a four year college or university in the field of Engineering. If you plan to transfer, work closely with your faculty advisor to make sure you take the appropriate courses.
