Physics

Physics image“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” – Albert Einstein

Physics is concerned with the nature of energy and matter, space and time. The laws of physics govern everything in the universe from the tiniest bit of matter to the largest star. Physics is a prerequisite to any in-depth study of the sciences and technologies. It leads to careers in engineering, astronomy, astronautics, medical research, geophysics, meteorology, and biophysics.
Physics is a “hard” science. This does not necessarily mean that physics is particularly difficult. However it does mean that physics is based on mathematics. A solid foundation in mathematics is essential for success in physics and engineering.

AA/AS Degree
The Associate of Science degree is designed to give you a traditional liberal arts education with a math or science emphasis that will transfer to a four year college or university. The AS provides a solid foundation of study in the areas of natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, and allied health. Click here for track specific information.
Program Description
The study of physics requires that you learn fundamental scientific concepts and become proficient in problem solving. These two goals go hand-in-hand. A student demonstrates his or her understanding of concepts by solving problems, and successful problem solving requires a solid understanding of physical concepts. Usually there is only one correct answer based upon the science and the mathematics. A student arrives at that unique correct answer through diligent analysis and careful calculation.
"60+60" Transfer Guarantee
Spend two years at PPCC, earning your Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree, and we’ll send you off with half the credits you’ll need for a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. Guaranteed.
If you sign up for the 60+60 Bachelor’s Degree Transfer Program, we guarantee that the credits you’ve earned at PPCC will automatically be accepted by any four-year, public institution of higher learning in the state – providing, of course, you follow a few simple rules. For instance, you have to maintain at least a “C” in each of your 60+60 courses. And only approved 60+60 courses apply. But other than that, there’s hardly anything difficult about it.
If you think you might want to move on to a state college or university after completing your two years at PPCC, ask one of our advisors about the 60+60 program. Find out more at www.ppcc.edu/60plus60.
Employment Opportunities
A degree in physics opens a variety of doors. Strong backgrounds in mathematics and the physical sciences lend themselves to careers in engineering, computer science, astronomy, and meteorology.
Career Path Notes
PPCC students can complete the basic physics courses and many of the mathematics courses needed for a bachelor’s degree in physics or engineering. They will need to take the more advanced and specialized physics courses at a four year university.

Minimum Recommended Basic Skills
ENG 090 and REA 090 are prerequisites for either Algebra-Based Physics or Calculus-Based Physics. In addition, College Algebra (MAT 121) is prerequisite for Algebra-Based Physics, and Calculus I (MAT 201) is prerequisite for Calculus-Based Physics. Students often complete required courses in Arts, Humanities, and Social and Behavioral Sciences while they are developing their mathematics skills in preparation for the physics course prerequisites.
