Teacher Education Preparation

Teacher Education Preparation imageEducation is the best provision for old age.

Pikes Peak Community College is committed to the recruitment, development, and preparation of diverse, high-quality K-12 teachers and Para-Professional Educators to meet local, state and national shortages. The need for better-educated, better-prepared teachers has never been greater. As the nation works to raise the quality of instruction, reduce class sizes, and expand academic programs, the demand for well-qualified teachers will steadily rise. Teachers interact with many people, plan and organize huge amounts of information, communicate both in writing and orally, effectively manage time, and make dozens of important decisions on a daily basis. PPCC teacher education graduates transfer to four-year colleges and universities and complete baccalaureate degrees providing them with the opportunity to help rebalance the educational workforce.
AA/AS Degree
The Associate of Arts degree is designed to give you a traditional liberal arts education that will transfer to a four year college or university. The AA provides a solid foundation of study in the areas of arts and humanities, communication, or social sciences. Click here for track specific information.
Program Description
Elementary Education Teacher Preparation allows students to complete an associate of arts degree preparing students for transfer to four-year colleges or universities in Colorado where they may complete Bachelor’s degrees and teaching credentials in two additional years.
Students identify a major and transfer institution prior to enrolling for courses and must meet with their faculty advisor before registering for classes to insure transferability of courses to their chosen institution/major.
Secondary Education students work closely with their faculty advisors, determine their major and transfer institution, and follow closely the recommendations for specific majors.
Para-Professionals may follow either track (if they believe they may continue on to obtain teacher certification) or transfer COTOP courses toward completion of an AGS degree.
"60+60" Transfer Guarantee
Spend two years at PPCC, earning your Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree, and we’ll send you off with half the credits you’ll need for a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. Guaranteed.
If you sign up for the 60+60 Bachelor’s Degree Transfer Program, we guarantee that the credits you’ve earned at PPCC will automatically be accepted by any four-year, public institution of higher learning in the state – providing, of course, you follow a few simple rules. For instance, you have to maintain at least a “C” in each of your 60+60 courses. And only approved 60+60 courses apply. But other than that, there’s hardly anything difficult about it.
If you think you might want to move on to a state college or university after completing your two years at PPCC, ask one of our advisors about the 60+60 program. Find out more at www.ppcc.edu/60plus60.
Employment Opportunities
Over the next ten years, more than two million new teachers will be needed to meet rising enrollment demands. Educators in all areas of the field, from principals to math and science teachers to education policy makers are in high demand. The skills needed and developed as a teacher are important for virtually all other careers.
Career Path Notes
In Colorado there is a statewide elementary education agreement that identifies 41 common courses for all public colleges and universities. The remaining 19 credits of a Associates degree are determined by the students’ choice of major and transfer institution.  See a teacher education advisor for more information on this program.
Secondary education majors should work closely with their faculty advisors and within a semester or two, determine a major and transfer institution. Working closely with your faculty advisors is key since teacher preparation programs require specific courses.
