PPCC Student elected SkillsUSA National Post-Secondary President

Colorado Springs, Colo. – Sept. 6, 2013 – Pikes Peak Community College (PPCC) Multimedia Graphic Design student, Leah Rife was elected to serve as the national, post-secondary president of SkillsUSA at the 2013 national conference in Kansas City, Mo. 

Rife has been a member of SkillsUSA for three years and served as a state officer last year. She was elected to serve as the national president by the officer team and advisors after a week of training in Washington, D.C. in July.  Rife is the youngest member and only female member of the post-secondary team. There has not been a national officer from Colorado since 1994. 

Rife’s duties include serving as a liaison between students and business and industry partners, conducting leadership trainings and presentations promoting SkillsUSA and travelling throughout the U.S. to attend state conferences and competitions. 

One of her first official duties will be to participate in the Washington Leadership Training Institute in Washington, D.C. this month. She will meet with senators and representatives to provide information about SkillsUSA and to encourage them to support funding. She has also been selected to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

SkillsUSA, formerly VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America), is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure the U.S. maintains a skilled workforce by providing technical and leadership skills training.  The SkillsUSA mission is to empower its members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible citizens. 

PPCC will host the state SkillsUSA conference in April of 2014.

Pikes Peak Community College, in its 45th year of operation, is a two-year college offering associate’s degrees and various certifications in career and technical fields. With four campuses, two military education centers in El Paso County and nearly 200 programs of study, PPCC serves approximately 22,000 students annually.
