Accessibility Services offers written How-To guides for AT recommended. Recommended AT and their instructions may differ based on whether the students' devices are Windows, Mac, iOS, and/or Android. Below are some examples of the most popular How-To guides requested and provided.

ClaroSpeak for Windows or Mac

What Is It?

A FREE app through Google Chrome that reads aloud your pdf textbooks

How Can It Be Helpful to Me as a Student?

  • Sometimes it can be easier to listen to your text materials rather than read them on a screen or in a book
  • ClaroSpeak can read to you the text within your pdf textbooks, highlighting the words as they are read, and offering you choices of voices and reading speeds

How Does It Work?

  1. Download ClaroSpeak free from the Chrome Web Store
    • Go to Google Chrome
    • Search for "ClaroSpeak Chrome"
    • Click on "ClaroSpeak - Chrome Web Store" in the options that come up
    • Click “Add It” on the right hand side of the ClaroSpeak icon
    • After a few minutes, the ClaroSpeak icon will pop up in Google Chrome
  2. To access, right click the ClaroSpeak icon
  3. Left click “Create shortcuts”
  4. Check the box for desktop and click “Create”
  5. Go to your desktop
  6. Double click the “ClaroSpeak icon”
  7. Once opened, click the upper left “Open file” icon, and open the pdf from where you saved it on your computer
  8. The pdf will open up in ClaroSpeak exactly as it looks originally
  9. To begin reading, click your mouse in front of the word where you want to start, and press the play button
  10. To stop reading, press the stop button
  11. To find a word in the text, either press “Ctrl F” or click the magnifying glass icon in the lower middle section of the screen
  12. To change the voice and speed, click the settings button at the top of the screen
    • Click the drop down arrow under voice on the right, and select the voice and speed that you desire
    • Click the “Test” button to test out the voice
    • Once you have the voice and speed that you want, click the green check mark button at the top

Freda for Windows 10

What Is It?

A FREE app through the Microsoft Store that reads aloud your epub textbooks

How Can It Be Helpful to Me as a Student?

  • Sometimes it can be easier to listen to your textbooks rather than read them on a screen or in a book
  • Freda can read to you the text within your epub textbooks and offer you choices of colors, fonts, spacing, voices, and reading speeds

How Does It Work?

  1. Download Freda free from the Windows 10 Microsoft Store
    • Go to Microsoft Store
    • Search for “Freda”
    • Click on “Freda epub ebook reader”
    • Click “download”
    • After a few minutes, your download will be complete
    • Freda will be within your start menu
  2. To access, click your start menu
  3. Click “freda”
  4. Once it opens, look for the “folder” icon under “sources”
  5. Click on “folder”
  6. Find where you saved the epub text on your computer
  7. Click on the epub text
  8. Click “Open”
  9. Your epub text will now open
  10. To start listening to your book, right click the word where you want to start listening
  11. Left click “read”
  12. You will now hear your text being read to you
  13. Adjust the speed, voice, and pitch at the bottom of the screen
  14. Stop reading by clicking once
  15. To adjust the color scheme, fonts, and spacing, right click the page
  16. Left click “settings” at the top
  17. Here you can adjust the color scheme, fonts, spacing, hyphenation, indentations
  18. Click “ok” when you are done

Screen Shades for Mac

What Is It?

A FREE screen overlay compatible with Mac computers

How Can It Be Helpful to Me as a Student?

  • Sometimes it can be easier to read text or look at images on your screen through a colored filter
  • Screen Shades allow you to place an overlay on your screen the color and transparency level of your choosing

How Does It Work?

  1. Download Screen Shades
  2. Once downloaded, double click on Screen Shades from your downloads
  3. To turn on a shade, click the “Shades On” box
  4. Change the shade color by using the drop down box “Tint Color”
  5. Customize your own shade color by using the “My Tint” option
  6. Change the darkness of the shade by clicking and dragging the “Tint Darkness” button
  7. To turn off the shade, uncheck the “Shades On” box
  8. Exit by pressing the red button in the upper left when you are done

ssOverlay for Windows

What Is It?

How Can It Be Helpful to Me as a Student?

  • ssOverlay allows you to place an overlay on your screen the color and transparency level of your choosing

How Does It Work?

  1. Download ssOverlay
  2. Once downloaded, double click the ssOverlay icon on your desktop
  3. To change the colors and transparency levels, right click the ssOverlay arrow icon in the lower right of your screen and left click “Settings”
  4. To exit out of the overlay, right click the ssOverlay arrow icon in the lower right of your screen and left click “Exit”
