New Student Advising

New Student Advising appointments are 45 minutes long, allowing our advisors to assist new students in successfully transitioning into college and the PPCC community.
During a New Student Advising appointment, advisors will:

  • Help students decide the best path to complete their goals
  • Explain prerequisites and discuss your academic history
  • Provide first semester course recommendations
  • Create personalized degree and certificate plans for students
  • Discuss transfer opportunities
  • Connect students to PPCC's student services and support services

Student are assigned to advisors based on their last name and program of study. Find your advisor by exploring the following Advising pages:

Business, Public Service & Social Sciences

Medical Sciences

Communication, Humanities, & Technical Studies

Natural and Physical Sciences

  • Schedule a New Student Advising appointment on Navigate and select your “Primary Advisor”. If your primary advisor is not available at a time convenient to you, chose an advisor from your “Advising Team”.
  • Phone appointments and video appointments using Zoom are available.
  • If scheduling a phone appointment, make sure to give us your best phone number in the comments section of the appointment scheduler.

If you are using Tuition Assistance or VA Education Benefits, we recommend meeting with a Military & Veterans Programs Academic Advisor.

Advisors will look at your previous test scores and transcripts to make sure you start out in the classes that are best for you. Submit your academic history before meeting with an Advisor to ensure they have all the information needed to help you build your degree plan.

Appointment No-Show Policy

In an effort to provide equal time to all students, the Advising & Testing office implemented a no-show policy. This policy serves as a reminder to be respectful of fellow students’ time, as advising and registration appointments are in high demand and can be particularly difficult to come by during peak registration periods.

A no-show, or missed appointment, is noted in the system if you:

  • Arrives more than 10 minutes late for an appointment
  • Fails to cancel an appointment in advance, either via Navigate or an email to the advisor
  • Improperly cancels an appointment or notifies the advisor after the scheduled appointment

After three no-shows, a student will be unable to schedule another advising appointment in Navigate and will need to contact their primary advisor via email for advising appointment options.
