Please read this entire message if you are using VA education benefits or plan to in the future.
In August of 2017, the US Congress passed the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2017, known as the “Forever GI Bill”. This new bill affects several parts of the GI Bill® programs. The principal section we want to make you aware of is Section 107 of the Colmery Act which requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to make monthly housing payments based on the location where a student physically attends the majority of classes. To accommodate this requirement, the VA is updating/changing the systems that colleges and universities use to certify student enrollment periods.
What does this mean for you – the student: This update by the VA has yet to be completed which may result in a delay to Fall 2018 enrollment certifications. Unfortunately, this means that if you are using VA educational benefits for the Fall 2018 semester, payments from the VA to students are expected to be delayed. Because VA is working on these changes, PPCC will also expect delays but will work diligently to keep pace with VA and certify as quickly as possible.
What can you do? To ease the impact of possible delayed VA payments, you are strongly encouraged to apply for financial aid early. Questions regarding financial aid can be answered by the PPCC Financial Aid Office or at 719-502-3000. You can also ensure that all requirements for your own certification with PPCC are complete so that you are not further delayed as we wait for information. If you would like to confirm your status with certification requirements, please contact the Department of Military & Veterans Programs main office line at 719-502-4100 or email is at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Finally, as the VA works to implement this law, we ask for your patience as changes occur. We know this is a major change and appreciate your understanding.
