Why choose Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Academy (PPRLEA) at PPCC?

The Pikes Peak Law Enforcement Academy will train you for a rewarding career in Law Enforcement. Your training will consist of tactical firearms training, law enforcement driving and arrest control techniques. You will also receive training in police procedures and a basic understanding of the law as it applies to police work. Upon completion of the academy, you will be eligible to take the Colorado P.O.S.T. exam, and after passing that you could get jobs as a police officer, dispatcher, parole officer, investigator or sheriff's deputy, among others.

Academy Application Process

Print this and use to make sure that you will have all documentation upon submitting the Law Enforcement Applicaition Packet.

PPRLEA Application

  • Proof of age ( must be 21 or older to graduate from academy )
  • Completed Medical Waiver - Select Quick clinics will accept physicals : EmergiCare 302-6942 402 W.   • Copy of High School diploma or GED ( college transcripts accepted as well )
  • Get official driving records for Colorado (Go to Driver ID services, then Request a Driver Record) - and any states lived in during the last 10 years.
  • Copy of valid CO Drivers License
  • 3 page typed essay ( see academy information and checklist )
  • Veterans only - copy of DD214

An extensive background check is completed on each applicant. Fingerprint checks will be conducted before the start of the academy. Anyone convicted of a felony will not eligible to attend the Academy. Certain misdemeanors may disqualify you from admission into the PPRLEA.

Admission into Pikes Peak Community College does not guarantee admission into the Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Academy.

Graduation from the Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Academy does not guarantee you will not have to attend a hiring Law Enforcement agency's department specific Law Enforcement Academy.

An oral board evaluation will be required and selection of cadets will be made based on the all information in the application process.

Academy Information and Resources

  • We offer well over 700 hours of curriculum and training towards the required Colorado Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) examination
  • Hands on Skills training is provided in arrest control, law enforcement driving and firearms
  • Upon completion of the Academy, graduates are able to take the Colorado POST certification exam. A passing score gives the cadet a 3 Year P.O.S.T. Certification.

  • How long is the Academy?

The Fall and Spring Day academies are 17 weeks long. The Spring Evening class extends from the Spring semester through the Summer semester due to the shorter evening class hours. All the academies have skills training (arrest control, firearms and driving) on the weekends.

  • Why are the fingerprints and Background checks required?

No person who has been convicted of a felony may be certified as a peace officer in the State of Colorado; also certain misdemeanor convictions may prevent an individual from becoming certified as a peace officer in the State of Colorado.

  • Will certain Law enforcement agencies still have me attend their academy, even though I am P.O.S.T. certified?

Some agencies may have you attend their agency specific Law Enforcement Academy as a condition of employment.

  • What if I fail a skills portion of the Academy, can I sill graduate or take the P.O.S.T. exam?

All aspects of the academy must be passed with a 70% or higher average score to graduate or take the P.O.S.T. exam.

  • Will this Academy guarantee I become employed upon completion?

The Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Academy will provide you with the training and skills you will need to pass the Colorado Peace Officers Standards and Training exam. Most law enforcement agencies have their own criteria for hiring.

  • What if I fail a skills portion of the academy?

Failure of one or more skills portions of the academy will result in the cadet retaking the skills in the next academy. P.O.S.T. certification cannot be granted until successful completion of the entire academy.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLO) are competencies with which students will be proficient at the completion of an academic program. Program Learning Outcomes link with course learning outcomes and competencies.
