The Surgical Technologist is an integral member of the surgical team including the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and nurse to deliver patient care before, during, and after surgery.  Before an operation, surgical technologists help prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment.  During the surgery, technologists pass instruments and other sterile supplies to the surgeons and assistants.

This degree is great to get students into the allied health care field. You will have a strong biology and science background with courses in Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology.

What can I do with a degree in Surgical Technology?

A Surgical Technologist is a pivotal member of the operating room team and this career requires a committed attitude and a certain set of patient centered qualities from those who practice in this profession. The Surgical Technology Program prepares you for an exciting career in a wide range of surgical settings, offering opportunities in hospital operating rooms, sterile processing, labor and delivery, ophthalmology, cardiovascular, plastics, orthopedics and many other specialties.

Students who successfully complete the PPCC Surgical Technology Program are able to than sit for the National Certification Exam for Surgical Technology given by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). You can practice under the credentials of Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) upon passing the exam.

Job Types
Surgical Technologists have many different job titles such as scrub tech, operating room technician, surgical assistant or instrument technician.  This is a very diverse job that does many tasks across the patient care setting.

This course examines the basics and theory of surgical practice and skills.

This course covers the basics of surgical pharmacology including the metric system, pharmacological theory, surgical drugs and aspects of anesthesia.

This course reviews general, obstetric/gynecological, orthopedic and other surgical procedures.
